It is obvious that military gear or tactical gear do not come cheap. But personally, I believe its a sound investment. And quite a few enthusiastic journey freaks like myself share my sentiments also.
During the past decade, I have spent quite a lot on tactical gear, both for private use as well as gifts to family and good friends who like to rough it out in the out doors. And in all that time, I only got one complaint. It was from a female cousin of mine. She's got a slight frame and I acquired her a tactical pack that was a bit to massive for her. But other that, everyone had only praises for the gear I got them.

Here are three reasons that explain why craggy travelers like myself think that military gear are perfect for adventure trips.
As Hard As It Can Get
Basically anything that is built to army directions must be quite difficult. I have an assortments of military backpacks and other gear like hydration systems and LED flash-lamps which have been with me for ages. And from the look of things, it looks like they are going to be with me for a long time to come.
I have been on desert trips, a 3-week trek thru Borneo and an expedition thru the Amazon rainforest with my military gear. They have survived mudslides, numerous typhoons, drops, skids and falls.
To tell you the truth, after a wash, they look in better shape than me after a long hard journey. You could find an occasional scratch here and there however it actually takes a bit beating to finish up in a tear or breakage.
Good Thought-out Designs
I also like the way military gear or tactical gear is designed. Take for instance a tactical back pack. These backpacks are designed in such a fashion that it maximizes space as well as improves accessibility. So you get tons of different sorts of storage compartments. Outside compartments have the usual flaps or zips. Inside compartments have hard and soft separators, flaps, netting, loops and ties.
Most tactical backpacks have Pals webbing on the outside so that you can attach other gear or pouches to it. On the inside, some have built in areas for hydration system and even safety kits.
Lasts A Very Long Time
As I have mentioned earlier, military gear lasts a long time. This is not really a good thing if you like getting new tactical gear after one or two years. What I typically do is attempt to induct people to join me on my journeys and I finish up giving them one of my seasoned backpacks for nothing.
In summation,
- Military gear may cost a bit more than conventional gear but it can certainly take a beating
- Well taken care of tactical gear can last for years of hard use
- Invest in a good, durable gear for demanding journeys
